Japanese artist Atsushi Suwa and his ultra-realistic girls (16 photos)

The works of hyperrealist artists have always amazed the imagination with their photographic verisimilitude. But even among these masters, there are geniuses capable of creating the impossible. Japanese artist Atsushi Suwa is one of them. His paintings constantly spark controversy, as not everyone believes they are not photographs.





Japanese art was once so chaste that even in depictions of sexual pleasures, women wore kimonos. Things are different now, and nudity no longer provokes outrage in the Land of the Rising Sun. Therefore, artist Atsushi Suwa easily organizes exhibitions and amazes the public with his mastery.



Atsushi Suwa was born in 1967 in Hokkaido. After high school, he entered Musashino Art University, becoming one of its top graduates. The talented artist was sent to Europe to continue his studies; in 1992, Suwa began an internship in Spain. He not only learned from European artists but also carefully studied the works of great masters at the Prado Museum and the Reina Sofia Museum.



Atsushi Suwa is now known as the artist of beautiful, often revealing, female portraits. But his "Father" project, completed between 1993 and 1995, brought him fame. This series of paintings depicts the artist's father, who was dying of an incurable illness. The paintings impressed the public so much that Suwa won first place in the 5th International Painting Competition, Fundacion Barcelo, in Spain. Incidentally, he became the first Asian to win a prize in the history of this prestigious competition.



After an internship in Spain, Atsushi Suwa returned to Japan and began painting nude female portraits. His specialty is photographic precision and surreal elements. Sometimes, only the fantastical details distinguish his works from photographs.



When asked why he mostly paints nude women, Suwa answers simply:

"Clothing is redundant information, as it implies social status and other attributes of a person. That's why I paint nudes."
