Apparently, in the 1950s, a successful lipstick test in the US required a group of women, their lips, and the lipstick itself. And the most important component of the test was a happy man, whom these women kissed. Moreover, the test subject had to be bald, so there would be enough surface area for everyone to test.





These photos were taken by LIFE magazine photographer Yale Joel, who documented most of the significant moments of the mid-20th century. Joel photographed stars, from Marilyn Monroe to popular models. He earned a reputation as a photographer for whom nothing was impossible; he excelled at shooting with special effects and unusual equipment.
