Santorini (or St. Irene) is one of the most beautiful islands in the Cyclades. The island apparently owes its rare beauty to a volcanic eruption (which, by the way, is still active today) that occurred in 1650 BC. Part of the crater went under water, and the remaining crescent-shaped half formed a sheer cliff almost 900 meters high, falling straight into the sea, and a natural huge bay, where numerous cruise ships anchor during the season.
Snow-white houses here and there interspersed with bright blue domed churches, many small shops and artisan shops scattered along small winding streets, archaeological sites of the Minoan era and phantasmagoric beaches with black sand and pebbles, all against the constant backdrop of the bright blue sea.
