Professional photographers are often so trained that their shots look like they were taken in a minute and effortlessly. But anyone with even a passing knowledge of photography knows how much time, preparation, skill, luck, and patience it takes to capture a single image.

Dutch photographer Albert Dros, whose work has been published in Time, National Geographic, and The Huffington Post, is known for his incredible landscape photographs. He recently decided to share the secret he uses to capture his best photos.

Albert Dros is convinced that when it comes to photography, patience is the most important thing. Some of his stunning images, such as this tulip field, required years of anticipation. More specifically, the photographer waited three years for the perfect combination of sunrise and mist over the tulips. And while the image didn't turn out exactly as he imagined, it's truly remarkable.

The Perfect Sunset

Only one week a year does the sun set right in the middle of this Amsterdam canal arch. After two years and five attempts, Albert Dros finally got what he was looking for.

Windmills in the Fog

Albert Dros had long dreamed of photographing the historic windmills of Zaanse Schans. But the right weather conditions never came to the photographer's aid. He had to work hard to capture the perfect shot.

The Milky Way with a few additions

"I've spent many nights getting up at three in the morning to take photos like this." Sometimes you need a little luck. Night photography is difficult in the Netherlands because the light is so polluted and our weather doesn't allow for clear clouds. It took me ten tries to get this shot."
