Photo Project — A Porter, the Invisible People of New York (13 photos) (photo)

Invisible people live among us, disappearing into the crowds of vast metropolises like New York. This idea is perfectly illustrated by a photo project by Polish photographer Sam Golanski, who created a series of photographs of New York City doormen.







Sam was struck by the power these people wield and how little attention we pay to them. They take care of us the entire time we're in the hotel, often having access to our personal information and even our belongings. And yet, this photo project is perhaps the first time they've truly received attention.

"These guys are rare. You can't get a job like this online," the photographer told Metro newspaper. "Some are second-generation doormen after their fathers." The series wasn't created without its challenges, which are understandable when photographing doormen on duty. "They're difficult to photograph because, by law, they're not supposed to be standing outside the building. So I had to persuade them to participate in the project. I don't think they'd ever been photographed before."
