Patrick Carew's "Gypsies" Photo Project (13 photos)
In his documentary portrait series "Gypsies," photographer Patrick Caru decided to observe the lives of this eternally wandering people. However, he did so in reverse, beginning his study of Romani culture and life in European countries, gradually moving from west to east, and ultimately concluding his research in India, believed to be the historical homeland of the Roma people.
The author managed to collect rare documentary material, devoting about ten years of his career as a photographer to this end. Patrick photographed a wide variety of Roma groups: from the French "manouches" who live in prosperity and drive Mercedes cars to the utterly impoverished Slovak and Romanian Roma. What he saw is astounding and makes one wonder how much living conditions can influence a person's appearance and mentality.
