Richard Sandler's Black and White Film Photographs (1980s)





Richard Sandler began shooting on the streets of New York in 1977, armed with a film Leica. He shot on both the prestigious Fifth Avenue and in graffiti-covered subway cars, capturing all the realities of the era. "You're recording the times," the photographer says. "You're looking for trends. If you're on the street, you see them. On the street, you see everything."

Sandler intended to become a chef. He believes that cooking and photography have much in common. Both rely on composition, the right mix of ingredients, and contrasting textures. In his darkroom, Sandler creates chemical soups, transforming silver halide crystals into soul food. A kind of alchemy occurs in each case. His black-and-white photographs typically highlight social inequality or subtly hint at it.

Later, Sandler began to shoot less and less on the streets. He felt that cell phones had robbed photographers of their subjects. "There's nothing more boring, nothing more insignificant and empty than a person walking down the street with a cell phone," the photographer said, and he turned to directing.
