The works of Moscow photographer Alexey Klyatov became known to the general public back in 2013. Using inexpensive equipment for macro photography, Alexey demonstrates the beauty of snowflakes so close that you can see even the smallest patterns. Alexey is still in search of ideal forms.

He was inspired to create the first series of photographs by Kenneth Libbrecht, a physics professor from the California Institute of Technology, who was the first to present amazing macro photographs of snowflakes on the Internet in the project "Snow Crystals". At first, Alexey thought it was simply impossible to do something like this at home without special expensive equipment. “Now I know I was wrong!” says Klyatov. “Any photographer can take pictures of snowflakes with a simple point-and-shoot camera.”

Alexey himself uses a slightly more complicated technique — a macro combination of a compact Canon Powershot A650is camera and a Helios 44M-5 lens. He also uses a glass background, which allows him to photograph snowflakes in different light. As soon as the glass is completely covered with snow, Klyatov wipes it off and starts all over again.

Sometimes Alexey has to take a whole series of identical photographs of one snowflake, and then superimpose them on top of each other — this way he manages to show the smallest details.

Sometimes you have to wait weeks for a good snowfall. “For this type of photography, patience, persistence and luck mean more than expensive equipment,” the photographer believes.
