Medina Dugger is a photographer from Lagos who has dedicated her life to one very exciting endeavor. For several years, she has been documenting unusual Nigerian hairstyles, showing in her works all the beauty of African culture associated with the art of braiding. According to the author, the collection of photographs with the interesting title “Color” is a kind of tribute to the legendary documentary photographer J.D. Okhaiyo Ojeikere, who for half a century, starting from the mid-twentieth century, photographed the various hairstyles of African women.

“African braiding culture is so ancient that it dates back thousands of years. This is an incredibly rich and varied process that begins at an early age. But, as you know, time does not stand still, and people continue to improve their skills and methods, paying attention not only to historical events and globalization, but also to new social models. Therefore, Hairdos art combines decorative and symbolic motifs indicating social status, age, as well as tribal and family traditions that many Nigerian women adhere to to this day,” says the photographer.
