Efim Efimovich Volkov was born in St. Petersburg in 1844. From 1866 to 1867 he studied at the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts in St. Petersburg, and from 1867 to 1870 he attended the Imperial Academy of Arts as a volunteer.

The artist's works are in the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the Irkutsk Regional Art Museum, the Smolensk State Museum-Reserve...

He lived and worked mainly in St. Petersburg and its environs, but in 1879, together with I.I. Shishkin took a trip to Crimea. Traveled extensively in Russia and abroad. In 1888, at the invitation of the Grand Dukes Sergei Alexandrovich and Pavel Alexandrovich, he traveled to the Middle East as a landscape artist: Turkey, Syria, Palestine, Egypt and Greece. He also worked on the Volga, in his beloved I.I. Levitan town of Ples.

Known not only as a landscape painter, but also as an illustrator. In 1899, Volkov was awarded the title of academician “for his fame in the artistic field,” but he continued to exhibit his paintings at traveling exhibitions. From 1878 to 1918, his numerous works were regularly exhibited at exhibitions of the Association of Itinerants, in whose activities he played a prominent role.

Quite often the artist in his work varied the motif of overgrown banks of small rivers and streams. Volkov's works are characterized by free, dynamic brushstrokes, varied textures and, at the same time, simplicity of the visual motif.
