There are very few artists working in the hyperrealist genre. It's difficult to single out anyone among them, as they are all masters of the rarest talent. But the Spanish painter Bernardo Torrens stands somewhat apart, having chosen the path of a follower of the great Spanish masters of the 17th century—Zurbarán, Ribera, and Velázquez.

Bernardo Torrens was born in 1957 in Madrid. The Spanish capital is known for its rich cultural heritage. The Prado National Museum is particularly impressive, displaying priceless masterpieces by European painters from various eras. It was this place that inspired Bernardo since his school days.

The great Spanish Renaissance realists influenced Torrens's work. Like them, the artist is not prone to distraction and focuses the viewer's attention on the central figure of the canvas. The master is characterized by incredible precision and attention to the smallest details. If he paints a portrait from life, he reproduces every detail, down to a mole.

The nude women in Torrens's paintings are beautiful, but they do not arouse lust. Like the classics of the 17th century, the artist imbues his works with noble restraint and classical grace. The women in the artist's canvases are not desired—they are admired as beautiful creations of nature.

Bernardo Torrens doesn't need bright colors to tell his story. Many of his paintings are executed in a very restrained, almost monochrome palette. This resemblance to black-and-white photographs from the mid-20th century adds to the artist's charm.
