Contemporary American artist Shaun Berke has set himself the challenging task of reviving Renaissance painting. According to the artist, his work embodies Gothic devotion with elements of chaos and Sienese humanism in a Venetian light. Burke's aesthetic is inseparable from Renaissance classicism with its love of the nude, death, and mysticism.

Shaun Berke was born in 1983 in California. He also received his undergraduate education there, earning a bachelor's degree from the Pasadena College of Art and Design. After receiving his diploma, Burke left for Europe. There, he became acquainted with the works of the great Dutch and Italian artists of the 16th and 17th centuries and developed his own style.

In Venice, Sean Burke studied with the artist Richard Houston and then interned with Odd Nerdrum. His several years in Europe were not in vain. His paintings leave few indifferent, although many find them too dark. Burke says the following about his work:

"I like to think of my paintings as cave paintings, something we have come to after awakening to the Renaissance, but then taking a few hits to the head from modernity." In general, I describe my works as traditional, figurative, allegorical painting."

Sean Burke's paintings are done in oil. The artist spares no effort or expense in preparation. He dresses his models in custom-made period clothing, uses original antique accessories, and features real animals.

Sometimes the artist's paintings are brutal and reminiscent of the works of José de Ribera. Some of Burke's paintings, which touch on biblical themes and monasticism, provoke outrage among believers. The artist is often asked about his attitude toward religion, often suspected of devil worship. He replies that he was a Christian for many years, but now believes only in science and the human spirit.
