Frank McCarthy was born in New York in 1924 and died of lung cancer on November 17, 2002 in Sedona, Arizona. He was a prolific American realist artist, painting advertising posters, paperback magazine illustrations, movie posters, and paintings of Wild West America. McCartney opened his own studio in 1948 and did work for Colliers, Argosy and True. McCarthy left the commercial art world in 1968 to concentrate on painting the Wild West. In 1975, he was invited to join Cowboy Artists of America. He was also inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1997.
