Artist I. P. Pokhitonov (69 works)
In 1894 I.E. Repin visited Paris and, among other things, attended the exhibition “Salon of the Champ de Mars”. In his notes, he sharply criticized most of the works presented at the exhibition: “But for all the torment and walking through the endless halls of the Salon, I rested with pleasure in front of the miniature pearls of our I.P. Pokhitonov. Of his ten things, most of them are pictures from Torro del Greco, on the Gulf of Naples. What brilliance, freshness, what consistency of design and tone everywhere, especially on the buildings!" Unfortunately, the work of this original Russian artist is currently in the shadows. And in the time contemporary to Ivan Pavlovich Pokhitonov, his paintings were highly appreciated by both great artists and art lovers. Delighted with the work of I.P. Pokhitonov was I.S., who knew him well. Turgenev.
Only after twenty-five years did the original self-taught artist decide to become a professional painter. Due to weak lungs I.P. Pokhitonov could not spend the winter in Russia. Therefore, he lived for a long time in France and Belgium, coming home in the summer months.
His first small-sized oil paintings on wood, exhibited in 1882 at an international exhibition in Paris, brought fame to the artist. He immediately receives an order from Emperor Alexander III himself to write places of military glory of the Russian army in the Russian-Turkish war of 1877–1878. He also carried out other orders of the autocratic philanthropist. In 1905 and 1906 I.P. Pokhitonov visited the great L.N. in Yasnaya Polyana. Tolstoy. P.M. Tretyakov acquired more than twenty works by the artist.
The skill of painting graceful and precise landscapes by I.P. Pokhitonova confirms the opinion of I. Kramskoy, I. Repin, N. Ge that for an original artist, systematic, within certain limits, art education is not always good, because it can neutralize the gift given to the master by nature
The artist died on December 12, 1923.
