A Helicopter Photographer Captures Airports, and They Look Like the Blueprints of a Meticulous Engineer (11 Photos)

Like other aviation enthusiasts, photographer Mike Kelley's obsession with air travel began in childhood and has never left. Kelley chartered a helicopter to fly over Los Angeles International Airport, Southern California Logistics Airport, and Seattle Boeing Field, capturing scales you'd never see from the ground.

With his photography project, Mike Kelly wanted to show the complexity and scale of modern air travel. Kelly's photographs are a symphony of symmetry.



Of course, getting permission to fly over an airport is no easy task. To achieve this, Kelly worked closely with Los Angeles International Airport for a long time. He worked with the airport to shoot images for advertising campaigns, while simultaneously cultivating relationships to pursue his own personal projects.

"The amount of human knowledge and effort that goes into getting these iron birds built, flying, and retired is simply enormous. As we sit in the terminal, we're surrounded by incredible infrastructure, the scale of which is impossible to comprehend from the ground," said Mike Kelly.
