Environmental activists attacked a painting by Velázquez in the National Gallery in London
They damaged the protective glass of the painting “Venus with a Mirror” by Spanish artist Diego Velazquez. The incident took place at the National Gallery in central London.
Law enforcement officers quickly detained the hooligans. They turned out to be two students - a boy and a girl aged 22 and 20 years, respectively. The vandals were taken to the station.
Young people tried to break the glass with hammers. At the time of the hooligan act, they were wearing white T-shirts with the inscription Just Stop Oil.
Museum workers removed the painting “Venus with a Mirror” from the exhibition. Restorers will have to assess the extent of the damage that was caused to the work of art.
