Built in France in 1794 as the 24-gun corvette l'Unite, she was captured by the British in 1796 and renamed Surprise. After rearmament, she became part of the English fleet as a frigate of the sixth rank. This ship became the main character of Patrick O'Brien's short stories and the film "Master of the Seas. At the End of the Earth" created in 2003 based on them.
