Plaza Botero – the Land of Cute Bronze Chubby Animals (23 photos + 1 video)

Even if the name Fernando Botero doesn't ring a bell, a stroll through this square in Medellin, Colombia, will definitely turn you into a fan.





Here live more than two dozen sculptures by Colombia's most famous artist—curvy ladies, plump cats, portly Roman soldiers, and plump men on even more plump horses.



Botero's unique style is known throughout the world. His figures, with exaggerated, almost grotesque volumes, are bravado and sensuality embodied in bronze.

It's hard to say they're simply fat. After all, the men and women, dogs and cats, and historical figures are grotesquely plump and incredibly cute. Looking at them, magic happens—a magical Boterization, evoking a pure, kind smile.



It's hard to pick a favorite among this crowd of bronze oafs. Classic nudes display their plump beauty in the shade of palm trees, a Roman warrior has acquired truly legendary proportions, and a plump sphinx gazes mysteriously from its pedestal.



But Plaza Botero is more than an open-air museum. This is a shining example of Medellin's brilliant transformation, where a neglected area has been transformed into a bright, art-filled park. It reflects Colombia's irrepressible spirit of renewal.
