Brazilian photographer Gustavo Lacerda has been photographing people born without the pigment melanin, which is responsible for fabric color, for many years.

Brazilian photographer Gustavo Lacerda has always been interested in understanding why albinos—those beautiful, unusual people—so shun society and, in a sense, are isolated. He worked on his project about albinism for several years, finding subjects through acquaintances, social media, and on the street.

According to the photographer, he wanted to give these people a sense of importance, so he shot their portraits in a studio—a place where they could choose their clothes, hairstyle, makeup, and background.

"The idea was to bring people who were considered outsiders to the forefront," the photographer explains. "At first, my attention made them feel embarrassed and uncomfortable, but later they began to feel proud. That was the most important and difficult thing to capture."
