American photographer Beth Moon created the mesmerizing series "Diamond Nights," combining ancient trees and starry skies in a single frame. For 14 years, she traveled through Namibia, Botswana, the United States, and other countries, photographing the planet's oldest trees. Her work was included in the book "Ancient Trees: Portraits of Time," and the "Diamond Nights" project marked a new stage—a transition from black-and-white film to digital color photography. Long exposures transform nightscapes into cosmic canvases, where baobabs thousands of years old meet the infinity of the universe.





Space and Roots: Scientific Inspiration

The idea for the project wasn't born by chance. Beth Moon was inspired by scientific research on the connection between trees and the movement of celestial bodies. Scientists from the University of Edinburgh have discovered that trees grow faster when exposed to high levels of cosmic radiation. Moreover, cosmic rays influence growth more strongly than temperature or precipitation. Researcher Lawrence Edwards discovered that tree buds change shape rhythmically throughout the winter, in time with the movements of the Moon and planets.



These discoveries inspired the photographer to reveal the invisible connection between ancient giants and the cosmos. Long exposures blur the line between the visible and the invisible—the photographs reveal the grandeur of the infinite universe and the power of plants whose roots reach deep into the earth.

A Month with the Baobabs of Africa

Beth Moon spent a month in Africa, observing baobabs and experimenting with lighting on moonless nights. These trees—some over a thousand years old—are the focus of the series. The photographer calls them the largest and oldest living monuments on Earth.

Baobabs can live up to 3,000 years, reaching 30 meters in height and 11 meters in trunk diameter. They can store up to 120,000 liters of water in their trunks, allowing them to survive droughts. Native Africans have used these trees for centuries as shelters, storage facilities, and even prisons.



Starry Sky Photography Techniques

To create "Diamond Nights," Beth Moon pioneered the transition from traditional black-and-white film to digital color photography. This allowed her to capture the incredible colors of the night sky—from deep blue to violet and starry silver. The long exposure photography allowed her to capture millions of stars invisible to the human eye.



The photographer worked in complete darkness, choosing moonless nights for maximum star visibility. Each shot required careful preparation—choosing the right angle, adjusting the lighting, and precisely timing the exposure.



Living Monuments of the Earth

Beth Moon considers ancient trees to be of exceptional importance, especially now, as humanity seeks ways to harmoniously coexist with nature. These trees are witnesses to history, having survived civilizations, wars, and climate change. They stand as living monuments, linking the past with the future.



Many of the trees Bet Moon photographed are endangered. Climate change, deforestation, and human activity are threatening these unique natural sites. The photo project became not only an artistic statement but also a call for the preservation of ancient trees.
