The "People Corresponding to Works of Art" Project by Austrian Photographer Stefan Draschan (90 photos)

Stefan Draschan hunts for curious shots in museum halls, like street photographers on the streets, transforming his observations into images with amusing and unexpected juxtapositions. His work perhaps confirms Oscar Wilde's words: "Life imitates art far more than art imitates life."





To expand his project "People Corresponding to Works of Art," Austrian photographer Stefan Draschan spends many hours in museums in Vienna, Berlin, and Paris. There, he seeks out intriguing subjects where the viewer, reverently gazing at the painting, harmoniously merges with the masterpiece, matching it with the colors or pattern on their clothing, their pose, hairstyle, or style.

"I started creating this series in 2015," says the photographer. "If you look closely, you'll notice it's unstaged; no one realizes I'm photographing from behind. It's pure street photography. I'm a voyeur and a hunter. I prefer to look for similarities with the paintings of the Old Masters or with old art in general. Similarities with contemporary art are quite common and too easy for me; I want to build a bridge between centuries, connecting different times."







The photographer seeks the perfect "match" between a person and a museum piece, combining the two motifs in the frame and linking the old with the new. He assures that all the images in the project are the result of patience and observation.
