A Day in the Life of an Arctic Recluse (21 photos)

In a stunning visual project called "No Signal," photographer Brice Portolano shares the remarkable stories of people who have chosen to escape the urban lifestyle to reconnect with nature.





"Arctic Love" is the first of four photo essays in this series. It follows a young woman named Tinja, who lives 290 kilometers from the nearest city. Portolano captures her unique lifestyle in the wilderness, where she keeps 85 sled dogs and lives a life of ease in the stunningly beautiful Finnish countryside.



Tinya survives well far from civilization: she cooks in a wood-burning stove, lights her house with candles, and draws water from the river, where she has to break through the ice every morning. This is her life, and she admires the peace she finds in her solitude, a tranquility found in the wilderness.

Tinya is quite content with a lifestyle in which she is accompanied only by animals and wildlife. She seeks inspiration in the Arctic wilderness, explaining: "I don't need all these material things. Nature provides me with everything I need."
