70s subculture, the Margaret Thatcher era, and the streets of Tokyo in Chris Steele-Perkins' social photography
Chris Steele-Perkins is a master of social photography, whose images have made thousands of people wince, smile, or anger them.
At the age of two, Chris Steele-Perkins moved to England from Burma with his father. After school, he studied psychology at Newcastle University. In 1970, he graduated and the following year began working as a freelance photographer in London. He worked primarily in England, covering social issues in British cities teeming with diverse subcultures.
In 1979, the photographer published the photo book "The Teds." The book gained widespread attention for its coverage of topical issues—the lives of young people and emerging subcultures. Steele-Perkins says of his projects: "It may sound like nonsense, but I like to think that if in 50 years people look back on late 20th-century teenage culture, 'The Teds' will be on their list of books to read." That same year, Steele-Perkins joined Magnum and soon began working in developing countries in Africa and Central America, while continuing his work in the UK. In 1982, together with the photography collective EXIT, he published the book "Survival Programs."
Currently, the photographer continues to work in the UK. Much of his work is devoted to his native region, its people, and their problems. He has published over 10 books, including the celebrated "Tokyo Love Hello," considered by many to be a model of street photography. Below are a selection of photographs by Chris Steele-Perkins from various series.
