In an interview, Akbar said what inspired him to create these monochrome portraits of cats. “Every photographer chooses his subject according to his mood. In the last few years, because of my interest in animals, I have focused on urban animals, especially cats.”

Mehrinejad grew up in Tabriz and received his bachelor’s degree from the city’s university. He is currently pursuing his PhD at the University of Tehran. “I was lucky to have an intelligent and knowledgeable mother who encouraged us to study, but most children in the outskirts of the city do not continue their education,” he says.

All photos were taken with a smartphone camera. Mehrinejad chooses this compact device over a professional camera because it makes it easier for him to get the angle he wants.

6. Scientists have found out that cats perceive us as parents

7. According to research, a cat's intelligence is at the level of a two-year-old child
