Oymyakon: how they live at the Cold Pole (23 photos)
Those who are freezing from the cold at -25 °C clearly have not been to Oymyakon. The average January temperature here is –50 °C. And it’s okay, someone lives and doesn’t even complain much.
New Zealand photographer Amos Chapel went on a two-week trip to the northeast of Yakutia to Oymyakon. Just see how people live in the coldest region on Earth. By the way, about the cold - this is not an exaggeration at all. In addition to the average winter temperatures, which for the average inhabitant of the Earth are not so average, there are also the lowest ones: –71.2 °C (according to unofficial data from 1924) and – 77.8 °C (1933).
With this knowledge, the New Zealander arrived in Yakutia. The thermometer showed a quite normal winter temperature of -47°C, and Amos suddenly realized that his trousers were too thin. “I went outside in -47°C and felt that my legs were numb and the saliva on my lips turned into sharp needles.”
It was difficult to film under such conditions. The photographer says that his equipment refused to work, the zoom froze. However, photos were still taken. On them are Oymyakon and Yakutsk.
