Neon, Megacities, and Flying Cars: How Syd Mead Imagined the Cities of the Future (10 works)
Syd Mead, from the 1960s to the 1990s, created illustrations of futuristic cities that still look remarkably modern today. The futuristic artist imagined megacities with gigantic skyscrapers, multi-level highways, neon signs, and vehicles hovering between buildings. His works shaped the visual language of science fiction for decades to come and inspired the creators of cult films like Blade Runner and Tron. Many of Mead's ideas about technology, advertising, and dense urban environments no longer seem like science fiction. The designer's admirers note that his concepts combined futurism with a sense of real life: these future cities always conveyed the movement, noise, and energy of a vast metropolis. Even decades later, Syd Mead's work continues to look like stills from a yet-to-be-made film about the future of humanity.
