"Portrait of Fräulein Lieser", painted by the modernist artist in 1917, was sold at auction in Vienna. The painting was considered lost for 99 years.

Gustav Klimt began painting a portrait of a young woman in 1917, but he died in February 1918 after a stroke.

The Lieser family received the painting unfinished and were soon forced to leave Austria due to Hitler's rise to power and anti-Semitism. Since 1925, the whereabouts of the painting have remained unknown.

Auction house im Kinsky said that "a painting of such rarity, artistic significance and value has not appeared on the art market in Europe for many decades."

The portrait was offered for auction on behalf of the current owners and legal heirs of Adolf and Henriette Lieser, in accordance with the Washington Principles regarding Nazi confiscated works of art. Bids at the auction started at 28 million euros.

In the past, Klimt's works have already brought in huge sums. His painting "Lady with a Fan" was sold at Sotheby's in London for £85.3 million, becoming the most expensive work of art ever sold at auction in Europe.
