This marvelous giant sculpture in the form of a fragrant, bright puppy once almost became part of a conspiracy.

Imagine: you are walking along a cozy Spanish square, enjoying the sun and suddenly you see it - a huge puppy covered in fresh flowers, which seems to be about to wag its tail. This is "Puppy" by American artist Jeff Koons, one of the most famous art objects in the world.

How a "live" puppy was born

Created in 1992, this 13-meter green oddball in the form of a West Highland White Terrier was supposed to be a symbol of optimism. The artist wanted to evoke a feeling of confidence and security, and chose the image of a friendly puppy covered in flowers.

Koons used computer modeling to bring to life the idea of topiary (shaped plants), popular in 18th-century gardens. But if such compositions were previously the size of a bush, then he made them the size of a house.

In 1997, a few days before the official opening of the sculpture in Bilbao, an incident occurred that few people remember, but which could have turned into a tragedy.

Three members of an extremist group, dressed as gardeners, tried to use the "Puppy" as cover to plant a bomb. They wore the same clothes as the workers and even carried with them flower pots - exactly the same as those that decorated the sculpture. Only inside one of them was an explosive device.

They were spotted after all. A chase began. During the clash, policeman Jose Maria Aguirre, who tried to stop the terrorists, was killed. The square where the famous "Puppy" now stands was renamed in his honor.

A Journey Through the Years and Countries

At first, the "Puppy" stood in Germany, then in Australia, and only in 2005 did it find its permanent home in the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. There it still delights tourists with its bright "fur coat" of live flowers, including more than 36 thousand plants.

The "Puppy" has become not just an art object, but a legend. Its scale, history, and even its connection to a terrorist attack make it unique.

And the flowers that change regularly with the seasons give it a chance to be new every time you look at it. It's no wonder the sculpture continues to grow — literally and metaphorically.
