Even a masterpiece by pop art icon Andy Warhol, created in the early 80s, got caught in the mix.

It's hard to be a modern masterpiece. Either a clumsy museum employee smashes you, or workers confuse you with garbage.

A cultural scandal has occurred in the Netherlands. The city hall building in the municipality of Maashorst was being renovated, and so as not to inadvertently damage 46 works of modern art, they moved them to the basement. The renovation was successfully completed, the garbage was taken out.

When the Maashorst municipality wanted to take inventory of the paintings, it turned out that dozens of them were missing.

Criminal charges were filed, and the municipality hired an independent investigative agency to try to find out what happened to the works of art.

During the investigation, it turned out that the workers who were cleaning up after the renovation were not so well-versed in the world of modern art and mistook the masterpieces in the basement for junk and threw the whole thing away. The silkscreen of Princess Beatrix, created by Andy Warhol in the early 80s, also went there.

The funny thing is that the paintings were never found, the Maashorst municipality stated that it is unlikely that the works of art will ever be found.
