Although, in fact, that is not his real name, his real name is François Lejeune. And the pseudonym is a derivative of his initials.

The future artist was born in 1908 in a family of a businessman. François's parents gave him a very good and varied education, but they only saw him as a successor to their cause. He himself wanted to study drama.

Lejeune wrote a play and tried his hand at painting. He unexpectedly achieved success with his cartoons for newspapers, with which he began collaborating in 1933. Then he began signing his works with the pseudonym Jean Effel.



Since the thirties, Effel has worked primarily with communist newspapers. Effel's evil cartoons of Hitler, Goering, Ribbentrop, Mussolini and Franco appear on the pages of these newspapers. French politicians also fall under the master's satirical pen: Lebrun, Bonnet, Herriot and others. Once the Soviet writer Ilya Ehrenburg came to him and offered to collaborate with the magazine "Lyu", published with the help of the USSR, and Effel agreed

During the fascist occupation of France, Effel participated in He worked in the underground "Midnight Publishing House", publishing anti-fascist satirical leaflets together with Paul Eluard and other artists.

After the war, he created one of his strongest works (according to critics) - the book "Still under occupation", which contains the best cartoons of 1947-1955. According to Sergei Yutkevich's apt remark, this collection should have been called "Yankee, go home!"

But, personally, I remember him for his cycles on the theme of stories from the Bible, united in the collection "Creation of the World". In our country, a cartoon was even released based on these cartoons. And Isidor Stock wrote the play "The Divine Comedy", staged by the Obraztsov Puppet Theater.
