The Krasnoyarsk court placed artist Vasily Slonov under house arrest until April 7 in a case of “extremist symbols,” or more precisely, because of tumblers with prison “tattoos.”

This time, a criminal case was opened against Slonov due to the demonstration of extremist symbols. On February 8, his apartment was searched and security forces seized equipment. Slonov's wife reported this.

In addition, it is alleged that the artist himself was detained at the Krasnoyarsk airport while attempting to fly to Kazakhstan.



A 56-year-old native of the village of Shushenskoye, who was unable to graduate from the Krasnoyarsk Art School named after Surikov.

Under the auspices of the Museum of Contemporary Art “PERMM” (PERMM), which was headed by the foreigner Gelman, who is now wanted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Slonov presented the exhibition “Welcome to Sochi 2014”: Olympic rings in the form of gallows and skulls, the monster Cheburashka and other eerie scenes, which they tried to pass off as “political satire”, the local authorities considered it a fake of art and the career of the future foreigner Gelman was imploded.

Slonov also became famous for his monument “Motherland”. It was installed for the anniversary of the Victory in 2010 in Krasnoyarsk, it was a figure of a nesting doll and looked rather like a mockery of the memory of our ancestors. However, this did not stop him from standing in his place for as long as 13 years. The monstrous art object was dismantled only in 2023.

As stated in the explanatory plaque for the composition:

The Motherland appears in the form of a huge matryoshka doll, which personifies the succession of one generation to another. The traditional image... embodies the ideas that made it possible to endure all the hardships of the war and post-war years... The sculpture is gradually becoming covered with rust... Rust symbolizes dried blood...



Last fall, a photograph of a tumbler with the symbols of the “AUE” movement, recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation, was posted on the artist’s personal page on the social network VK. The court decided to destroy the toy, but Slonov got off with administrative charges and therefore did not calm down, but continued to “create.”



Artist and colleague Alexander Levchenko said at the trial that Slonov is “the most seasoned patriot.”

The investigation requested his detention for two months. However, the court ordered the artist two months of house arrest - until April 7 - with a ban on certain actions.

A criminal case has been opened against Slonov under Art. 282.4 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Repeated propaganda or public demonstration of Nazi paraphernalia or symbols, or paraphernalia or symbols of extremist organizations, or other paraphernalia or symbols, the propaganda or public demonstration of which is prohibited by federal laws.”
