David Cox (born April 29, 1783, Birmingham - died June 7, 1859, Harborne near Birmingham) was an English painter and graphic artist.
David Cox was born into the family of a blacksmith. In 1803 he came to London and worked there as an artist at Philip Astley's theater. At the same time, Cox was studying watercolor painting under the guidance of John Worley. Two years later, he entered the Royal Academy of Arts as a student and published several of his essays on watercolor and landscape painting. Later becomes a member of the Royal Society of Watercolor Painters. In 1826, Cox made a study trip to Holland, Belgium and France. David Cox is one of the most significant English landscape painters and is one of the predecessors of the Impressionists. His son David Cox (Junior) was also an artist.
