Jorge is never without his Nikon D750 camera – on the ground or in the air.

From the cockpit of an airliner, the Ecuadorian captures stunning images of storm clouds and lightning strikes.

This image, titled "Pacific Storm," won third place in the Landscape category of the 2016 National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year competition. From the cockpit of a plane flying at 11,000 meters, Borha captured a breathtaking scene of lightning cutting through storm clouds.

"I really like this photograph because it gives you a sense of the amazing size and power of the storm. At the same time, it's amazing that you can fly calmly in still air, without coming into contact with the elements. Storms are difficult to photograph because lightning strikes happen so quickly, there's no tripod handy, and the numerous reflections of interior lights from the equipment get in the way.

A blinding storm.

Whenever Santiago has the opportunity, he takes out his camera and captures the beauty he sees in the air. His photographs reveal rare weather phenomena—storms, lightning, and rain.

The pilot says he has managed to combine his two greatest passions in life—flying and photography.

Pilots of South American airlines have a bonus: they fly over regions where storms and hurricanes are most common, and they can observe these natural phenomena firsthand.
