Mary-Austin Klein is a contemporary American realist artist born in San Bernardino but raised on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, California. Even in her early childhood, Mary Austin found inspiration in the landscapes of California. After school, she attended the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, where she met her future husband, a 24-year-old resident of the Echo Park neighborhood in Los Angeles, and retired from painting for several years.
