Joyce Lee: The Artist Called the 21st Century Dali (20 photos)
Joyce Lee's paintings are vibrant, erotic, and, at first glance, completely incomprehensible. This Korean artist works in the surrealist genre, but also emphasizes sexuality. Lee is sometimes called the 21st-century Salvador Dalí for the profound symbolism and spectacular nature of her paintings. The artist doesn't consider herself a major figure in art and simply does what she and her admirers enjoy.
Artist Joyce Lee was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. She drew while still in school, but didn't see herself as an artist in the future. Lee dreamed of becoming a philologist and so graduated from university with a degree in English language and literature.
After graduating, she worked for airlines for a while. But over time, she realized that drawing and painting were her true calling. So, Lee started all over again. She quit her job and enrolled at Seoul National University.
With a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, Joyce Lee began working as an artist. Things weren't going well right away, but over time, her unique talent was noticed and she began receiving significant commissions. As an illustrator, Lee worked for such respected publications as Playboy and Numero Berlin. She has commissioned advertising work for The Learning Company, LG Corporation, FIAT Motors, and many others.
The artist prefers to work with pencils and watercolors. The main themes of her paintings are aspects of love and sexuality, expressed through the symbolism of the human body and natural objects. Lee often touches on the theme of religion, demonstrating that even sexuality cannot be eradicated by a monastic lifestyle.
