Architectural mirage: how a mirrored house dissolves into the Alpine landscape (9 photos)
A stunning structure has appeared on a high mountain meadow above Gstaad, Switzerland, easily mistaken for an optical illusion. The installation, titled "Mirage Gstaad," by American artist Doug Aitken, depicts a country house whose walls are entirely covered in mirrors. This design allows the building to literally merge with nature, becoming a natural extension of the surrounding mountains and sky.
The appearance of this "ghost house" is never the same: it continually transforms with the weather and time of day. Be it morning fog, scorching sun, storm clouds, or the soft rays of sunset, the installation reacts sensitively to any changes in the atmosphere. The artist himself admits that he has always been fascinated by works of art that can live and change with the surrounding landscape.
The most interesting thing is that the prototype for this art object was the typical residential buildings of American suburbs of the 1920s and 1930s. Transplanted to a completely different environment, amidst majestic Alpine peaks, this familiar and familiar architectural silhouette became a veritable mirage—an object that paradoxically declares its presence and simultaneously completely dissolves into space.
