Vertical forest in Milan: a luxurious garden-house (5 photos)
Milan's Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest) residential complex has long been an architectural sensation, redefining the concept of urban comfort. The two towers, designed by architect Stefano Boeri, are a veritable green oasis: their facades are planted with over 20,000 plants, including trees, shrubs, and perennials. Living in such a place is not cheap. This concept requires significant investment in maintenance: professional gardeners maintain the flora, using climbing equipment to tend to the plants without disturbing residents. Due to the need for such complex maintenance, monthly utility bills can be substantial.
Despite its visual impact, the project is controversial: critics point to the enormous amount of concrete and steel required to support the weight of the soil and trees, calling into question the true sustainability of the "vertical garden." Nevertheless, Bosco Verticale remains one of the most recognizable examples of how a metropolis tries to find a balance between architecture and nature, transforming ordinary residential towers into the city’s “green lungs.”
