Photo tour of the historical and cultural complex of Zaporozhye Sich, visiting the performance of the equestrian theater "Zaporozhye Cossacks" on the island of Khortytsia.

Despite the fact that information about the appearance of Cossacks in the lower reaches of the Dnieper dates back to the end of the 15th century. (and perhaps this happened earlier, see First mentions and origins), according to researchers, the first Zaporozhye Sich (its prototype) was established by the Volyn prince Dmitry Baida (Vishnevetsky) in 1553 on the small Dnieper island of Malaya Khortytsia near the modern city of Zaporozhye and existed until 1557.

It was a fortress built at D.I. Vishnevetsky’s own expense. It was located not far from the pastures of the Crimean Khanate (on the Konskie-Vody river / modern Konka river, Zaporozhye region /). The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth did not provide any assistance to Vishnevetsky in building the fortress; on the contrary, the behavior of the Russian Kingdom was different - it accepted D.I. Vishnevetsky into the service, paid him a salary and transferred him to the estate of the city of Belev. The prince "for all this swore by the life-giving cross to serve the Tsar all his life and pay good to his state."

After the death of D.I. Vishnevetsky forgot about the fortress, but the Cossacks remembered the idea of repelling Crimean raids in the lower reaches of the Dnieper. Soon this idea was revived - well-fortified Cossack military camps appeared - Zaporozhye Sich.

Currently, the island of Malaya Khortytsia is named after Baida.
