The bay in the Mauritanian city of Nouadhibou is the largest ship graveyard. Over the past 20 years, more than 500 ships have accumulated here, living out their days.
Nouadhibou, located on the west coast of Africa, is the second largest city in Mauritania. In 1963, a cargo port was built here. Disposal of an old ship is a rather expensive procedure, so for many years the authorities of the port of Nouadhib willingly allowed shipping companies to leave ships in the bay that had already sailed for a more modest fee.
In 2008, Mexican photographer Ian Smith traveled to Nouadhibou Bay to document the old titans.
