The mosaicist who broke the system (9 photos)
Mosaic is a fairly popular and widespread technique. It, like others, has its own canons and rules. Moreover, this art is ancient and has been known since the times of the Roman Empire.
But rules are there to be broken. Creating something new, different from what was previously invented. And alive, as the Italian master Giulio Menossi does.
In the artist’s homeland, they still adhere to strict guild rules and canons, which made it possible to preserve the traditional style of mosaic. But this was not enough for Giulio. He studied with the famous master Domenico Colledani. Having gained enough experience, I dared to move away from generally accepted canons and make the mosaic not static, but three-dimensional, alive, moving.
Dynamic mosaic
This is exactly how Menossi characterizes his direction. In his opinion, a dynamic mosaic is a story told in real time. Looking at the panels, you can find yourself in a magical land woven from lines, curves, shapes, and colors. Where everything is in its place and everything is not accidental.
Demanded but boring wreaths, nymphs, satyrs, gods and other classical themes did not inspire the mosaicist. And he began to create other tesserae - mosaic tiles, each of which was stylistically connected with the previous and subsequent ones, forming a single canvas.
Giulio is happy that at one time he did not listen to his relatives, who considered professions in the field of art frivolous, and eminent masters who strictly followed the canons. I am happy that I became an innovator and do what I love. And he advises all aspiring mosaicists to share knowledge and tell stories. After all, only the stories told will be heard.
What do you think of Menossi's work?
