The city is located 234 km from Stavropol, 64 km from Mineralnye Vody station, in the northern foothills of the Greater Caucasus at an altitude of 800-1069 m above sea level. Originated from a Russian military fortress founded in 1803. The city owes its origin and name to the source of acidic mineral water Narzan.
