Reuters featured nearly 100 photographs from around the world featuring mothers and their daughters. Each woman was asked about her profession, the age at which she completed her education, and what she would like her daughter to become. The girls were asked the age at which they would complete their education and what they would like to be in the future.

We present some of these families to you.





Mogadishu, Somalia



34-year-old Saseedo Sheikh Yakuub with her 13-year-old daughter, Faadumo Subir Mohamed, at their home in a regional camp for internally displaced persons. Saseedo, a self-employed woman, dreamed of becoming a businesswoman as a child. She studied until she was 20. She hopes Faadumo will become a doctor. Faadumo is graduating high school in 2017 and wants to become a doctor when she grows up.

23-year-old Sulochna Mohan Sawant poses with her five-year-old daughter, Shamika Sawant, in her home. Sulochna works as a maid. As a child, she dreamed of becoming a doctor, but was forced to leave school when she reached the age of 14. Sulochna wants her daughter to become a teacher, and Shamika dreams of the same.

Tokyo, Japan



39-year-old Manami Miyazaki and her 13-year-old daughter, Nanaha, at home. Manami, a housewife, studied until her 20s. She dreamed of working with people. Now she hopes her daughter will happily marry and devote herself to her family. She says it would be wonderful if her daughter could find a job that showcases her abilities and interests. Nanaha wants to be a designer, musician, or nurse.

Bamako, Mali



30-year-old Oumou Ndiaye and her 9-year-old daughter, Aissata Golfa, at home. Oumou, a housewife, never attended school. As a child, she dreamed of marrying a local businessman. She hopes her daughter will also marry into their ethnic group when she grows up, but will continue to study until she is 20. Aissata says she will be 18 when she finishes school. She dreams of becoming a schoolteacher.

Deir al-Zor, Syria



39-year-old Bidaa Mem Thabet al-Hasan-um-Suleiman poses with her 9-year-old daughter, Mariam Khaled Masto, outside their home. Bidaa is the director of a school founded by a group of teachers and volunteers. She dreamed of becoming a gynecologist and hopes her daughter will attend pharmacy school. She says she will allow Mariam to follow her own ambitions—any success her daughter has will make her happy. Mariam will complete her education in 13 years. She would like to become an Arabic teacher in Deir al-Zor.

Langa, South Africa



30-year-old Thozama Kala and her 9-year-old daughter, Mpho, in the kitchen of their home in a Cape Town township. Thozama entered university in 2002 and is studying office administration. She hopes her daughter will become a doctor. Mpho says she wants to be a teacher.

Tegucigalpa, Honduras



33-year-old Susana Maria Cardona and her 12-year-old daughter, Alejandra Rubin Cardona, pose for a photo inside their home in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Susana Maria, a housewife, graduated from high school at 17. She dreamed of becoming a lawyer. She hopes her daughter will become a doctor. Alejandra Rubin has 11 years of school left and dreams of becoming an agronomist.

Dortmund, Germany



Bulgarian immigrants Ayşe Kakarmustafa, 33, and her 11-year-old daughter Neriman at home. Ayşe graduated from high school at 14 and worked in a shoe factory in Bulgaria. As a girl, she wanted to be a hairdresser. Ayşe hopes her daughter Neriman will be able to do whatever she wants when she grows up. Neriman wants to be a doctor.

Havana, Cuba



43-year-old Damaris Matos Curbelo and her 14-year-old daughter, Ana Laura Villar Matos, near their home in the center. Damaris completed her education at 21 and now works as a secretary in the History Department at Havana City Hall. Damaris dreamed of becoming a doctor as a child and hopes her daughter will be able to realize her dream. Her daughter, Ana Laura, says she would like to be a biologist.

Shepshed, Central England



Claire Coyne, 43, with her 10-year-old daughter, Ella, in their home. Claire, a bank clerk at Coutts, attended school until she was 15. As a child, she dreamed of becoming a physical education teacher. She says that whatever career her daughter chooses, the most important thing is that she is happy. Ella hasn't given it much thought yet, but she plans to attend university eventually. She's not sure yet what career she'll choose, but she'd probably like to become a dance teacher.

Pambah, Guatemala



43-year-old Alicia Chiquin and her 18-year-old daughter, Fdelina Jah, in their home. Alicia has no formal education; she's always worked the land. Her daughter, Fidelina, also never went to school and plans to work around the house and on the land like her mother when she grows up.

Blackhawk, USA



52-year-old Denise Arthur and her 13-year-old daughter, Linnaeus Thibedeau, in their home. Denise Arthur is a restoration ecologist. She holds a doctorate, completing her education at the age of 34. As a child, she dreamed of studying animal behavior. Denise hopes her daughter, Linnaeus, will become a biologist when she grows up. Linnaeus herself would like to earn a doctorate and become a marine biologist.

Gura Sutii, Romania



39-year-old Niculina Fieraru with her 13-year-old daughter, Flori Gabriela Dumitrache, at their home in the village. Niculina Fieraru is unemployed and raising two children. She hopes her daughter, Flori Gabriela, will become a seamstress. Flori Gabriela dreams of becoming a pop singer. She would like to attend high school in a town 23 km (14 miles) away, but the family cannot afford it. Romanian NGOs have offered the mother a scholarship so that her daughter can still complete her education.

Pavão-Pavãojinho, Brazil



45-year-old Raimunda Eliandra Alves and her daughter Ana Paula Leonardo Justino at their home in the slum. Raimunda works as a cashier at a supermarket. She completed her education at 19. As a child, she dreamed of becoming a math teacher. She hopes her daughter Ana Paula will study to become a veterinarian. Ana Paula says she will attend school and then graduate from college in 2025. She wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up.

Gulu, Uganda



42-year-old Lucy Oyelaya with her 14-year-old daughter, Abber Lilian, at their home in Onanga. Lucy is a farmer who completed her education at 18. As a child, she dreamed of becoming a teacher. Now she really wants her daughter to become a nurse. Her daughter, Abber Lilian, says she doesn't know when she will finish her education. She's not sure yet what she'll do when she grows up, but she could probably become an accountant.

Athens, Greece



Tonia Giannari, 39, and her 10-year-old daughter Elena in their apartment. Tonya is a housewife. She completed her education at 18. She hopes her daughter will become a dance teacher when she grows up. Elena dreams of the same.

Tepito, Mexico



Rosaura Realzola, 51, with her 13-year-old daughter Alexandra Yamilet in the entrance of their building. Rosaura works as a cleaner. She completed her education at 16. As a child, she dreamed of becoming a teacher. Rosaura hopes her daughter Alexandra will become a nurse. Alexandra will graduate in 2023 and says she dreams of a medical career.

Seoul, South Korea



43-year-old Kang Hyun-jeong and her 11-year-old daughter, Yoo Ha-min, in the living room of their apartment. Kang Hyun-jeong works as an accountant. She started working while in her senior year of high school, and in 1999, she enrolled in the business department at the Korea National Open University because she wanted to continue her education. She combined work and study and graduated eight years later, in 2007. When her children are older, she plans to earn a master's degree. Kang Hyun-jeong says her children are creatively gifted, but the reality is that it's difficult to make a living from art. Her daughter, Yoo Ha-min, says she dreams of becoming a designer or artist when she grows up.

Caringbah, Australia



Kylie Glass, 40, and her 12-year-old daughter, Abby Glass. Kylie graduated from high school at 17 and currently works as a childminder instructor. When she was little, she dreamed of working with children. Now, Kylie just wants her daughter to be healthy and happy. Abby says she loves everything science-related, so she might eventually decide to become a forensic scientist and work in the police. Or she might want to switch completely and become a hairdresser.

Singapore



Samann Loh, 40, and her 10-year-old daughter, Given Tan, pose for a photo in their apartment. Samann works as a human resources director at a preschool organization. As a child, she had many dreams: she wanted to become both a fashion designer and a flight attendant. She later realized her dream and became a flight attendant. Samann hopes her daughter will find a passion she enjoys. Given Tan says she would like to be a fashion designer when she grows up.
