Self-portrait, Ed van der Elsken
Anticipating many modern trends, Dutch photographer and director Ed van der Elsken was already shooting what would now be called vlogs and personal blogs back in the 50s. His lens captured the cycle of life, with himself at the center. Only the settings and countries changed, be it post-war bohemian Paris, a ruthless African safari or his native Amsterdam, dots on the map in his incredible round-the-world road movie. Shooting for more than forty years, van der Elsken was in the closest contact with this world and his heroes. His legacy became the impetus and inspiration for the genre of subjective, confessional photography. When the outrageous Nan Goldin discovered his pictures, she said: “It feels like meeting a lover or finding a brother.” In her native Netherlands, she has long been considered one of the leading street photographers of the 20th century,
