The photographer shows Russia without embellishment (41 photos)
Russian photographer, journalist and social worker Dmitry Markov is known for his sometimes harsh photographs depicting Russian reality, mainly the lives of ordinary people. The photographer explains that he is drawn to the “ugly side of life” because he considers himself part of it.
Most of the people whom Dmitry photographs, he knows personally, and this is noticeable, since there is always an element of intimacy in these photographs.
Dmitry Markov was born in Pushkin, and now lives in Pskov. He was a social worker, worked on youth issues, and for 7 years worked as a volunteer in an orphanage, where he began to study photography. Dmitry says that he likes Pskov. According to him, a person can learn everything online, especially in the creative field, and does not need to settle in an expensive metropolis for this. But he travels a lot around Russia.
Dmitry Markov's photographs are candid, intimate, sincere and filled with gritty realism, but at the same time they are whimsical, eerie and magical. This genre of photography can be called “magical photorealism.”
