19th Century Street Photographer Preserves Old Paris for Us (21 Photos)
Frenchman Eugene Atge was perhaps the world's first street photographer. He was engaged in painting, but gave it up, realizing the poverty of his abilities. Then he took up photography. Wandering the streets of Paris at the end of the 19th century, he captured people and views, calling his work “documents for artists.” He sought to help painters not waste time searching for nature, devoting their talents entirely to work in the studio. And for us they have become invaluable historical documents.
