A child in the Netherlands accidentally damaged a painting worth more than 50 million euros (2 photos)
The work of the American artist is considered the main treasure of the museum in Rotterdam.
A young visitor to the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam damaged a painting of incredible value and beauty. The victim of the young "vandal", who could easily have confused the canvas with painted wallpaper, was the painting "Grey, Orange on Burgundy, No. 8" by the American artist Marco Rothko. The cost of the "main treasure" of the museum is estimated at 50 million euros.
It is reported that the cause of the incident was an oversight - the young Picasso decided to add his own colors and scratched the lower part of the painting with something. It is not reported who will be responsible for the damage to the canvas. But it is known that the painting was insured.
Now the painting has been removed from the Depot hall, where the most valuable works of the museum are exhibited. They say that the restoration will take a lot of time and will be quite complicated. According to restoration and conservation specialist Sophie McLone, any damage to Rothko's paintings becomes especially noticeable due to the unusual materials (mixtures of pigments, resins and glue) and the lack of a varnish coating.
“This is due to the combination of sophisticated modern materials, the lack of a traditional coating layer, and the intensity of the flat color fields, which make even the smallest damage instantly noticeable. In this case, damage to the upper layers of paint can significantly affect the perception of the painting,” McLone said.
