This album of postcards, published in Stockholm in the early 1900s, shows the main sights of Kyiv as they appeared in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. At this time, rapid industrialization was taking place in the Russian Empire, and Kyiv became a major trade and transport center. Many noteworthy architectural monuments, as well as educational and cultural institutions of the city, date back to this period. The first urban electric tram system in the Russian Empire began operating in 1892 with the acquisition of two electric trams, which replaced the ancient horse-drawn carriages. The funicular connecting the aristocratic upper city with the old shopping district of Podil (Podil) in the lower city was built in 1905. The album contains views depicting a tram, funicular, the Dnieper River with the embankment and Nikolaevsky Bridge, Vladimir Cathedral, St. Sophia Cathedral, the Catholic Church St. Alexander, the opera house, museum, university, polytechnic institute and the city's main thoroughfare, Khreshchatyk (or Khreshchatyk), which appears to be a prosperous street of shoppers and commercial buildings. Many of the structures shown in these views were destroyed during World War II, making the album a valuable document of the city's history.
