In 1977, the National Geographic Society (USA) published this book by journalist Bart McDowell and photographer Dean Conger - a 370-page work on “personalized geography”, a portrait of a huge country and its inhabitants. The two Americans traveled all fifteen republics, visited dozens of cities, and the result of a two-year odyssey was a detailed story about the Soviet Union. The book introduced Western readers to the history, culture and way of life of the peoples of the USSR, almost without touching on pressing political issues. There is no criticism, pretentiousness, or exaggeration of flaws - “Journey...” resembles a mixture of Soviet geography and history textbooks, presented on behalf of a living person and having lost its ideological pumping.
