Los Angeles-based photographer Nicholas Freeman has a unique perspective on artistic photography. He always prioritizes the creative element, leaving technical details secondary. Freeman believes that a true artist can create a masterpiece with any equipment and in any conditions. His photographs confirm this—they lack high detail and play of color. They captivate with nude female bodies and the interplay of light and shadow.

Nicholas Freeman became interested in photography at an early age. His grandfather, an aerospace engineer, played a significant role in this. It was he who gave his 10-year-old grandson an 8mm movie camera, and later his first still camera. Freeman's mother also influenced his creative development. She made custom wedding dresses, and her studio was filled with fashion magazines featuring excellent photographs.

In high school, Nicholas received his first digital camera. It was a primitive 6-megapixel Fujifilm camera. But he mastered it thoroughly and realized that its minimal specifications were quite sufficient for creativity.

After high school, Freeman enrolled at Santa Monica College, where he studied technical photography. During his studies, he was fortunate to land an internship with renowned fashion photographer Dominique Guillemot. Nicolas enjoyed working with the master so much that he stayed in his studio for six years.

After gaining excellent experience, the photographer began to develop independently and soon gained recognition. Freeman collaborated with many renowned brands, including PVH, the parent company of such renowned brands as Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger. In 2020, due to the pandemic, the artist switched to freelancing, which gave him time for non-commercial work.

Light, Shadow, and the Body

Nicholas Freeman's portraits are characterized by a complex interplay of darkness and bright light, the obvious and the invisible. All photographs are taken with a simple camera and an inexpensive lens. In interviews, the artist often says that expensive equipment cannot replace a sense of composition and creative approach.
