Gustav Jonge (de Jonghe, 1828-1893) was a Belgian painter, son of the landscape painter Jean Baptiste de Jonge (1785-1844).

In his youth, he showed remarkable ability to play the violin, which is why his father wanted to make him a musician. however, feeling still a great attraction to painting, the young de Jonge decided to devote himself to this branch of art and studied with Professor Naves in Brussels, also taking advantage of the advice and support of the famous L. Galle and a scholarship from the city government.

He tried his hand at portraiture, sacred history and the historical genre, until finally he devoted himself exclusively to reproducing scenes of the domestic life of middle-class women and children. This type of painting gave him fame, especially after his move to Paris.
